Services Dulles Metrorail Expansion - Case Study
Phase 1 of the $2.9 billion Dulles Metrorail expansion project is completed. The Silver Line began running on July 26, 2014, connecting the Dulles International Airport and the nation’s capital with stops in Tysons Corner, the economic hub of northern Virginia. IBTS is proud to have worked on this project to ensure the safety of citizens using the Metro.
As one of the largest infrastructure projects in the United States, the Metrorail expansion has received national attention. IBTS was hired by the Virginia Department of General Services (DGS) to be their eyes and ears during the building of this complex project. Working with the many players and stakeholders involved in this multi-phased, multi-jurisdictional project, IBTS provided code compliance inspections and observing special inspections around the clock as necessary throughout the five-year construction. With our vast expertise in code compliance, we were involved in most aspects of the expansion, including:
- Observing the construction of caissons, piers and elevated guide ways, as well as the proper use of concrete mixtures
- Inspections for two 1,700-foot long tunnels
- Inspections of the electrical, water, mechanical and plumbing systems of four stations
- Inspections and testing of Metrorail infrastructure
