November 01, 2010 – Herndon, VA: The Council of State Governments’ representative will lead the Institute for Building Technology and Safety’s Board of Directors. Bert Jones, director of Engineering and Buildings for the Virginia Department of General Services, will chair the board of the nonprofit organization focusing on building technology and safety in residential and commercial structures for government, industry and business.
Jones brings CSG’s voice to the table and its unique, three-branch state government perspective. Representatives from the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, National League of Cities, National Association of Counties and International City/County Management Association also serve on the Institute for Building Technology and Safety Board of Directors.
“IBTS is a unique organization that brings solid technical knowledge to support state and local government, particularly in carrying out major infrastructure projects and ensuring code compliant construction,” Jones said. “I look forward to working with IBTS during the coming year to broaden its profile as a valuable resource to state and local government-particularly during these tough economic times.”
Jones has more than 20 years of experience in Virginia state government, including 18 years with the Department of Corrections where he served as a project manager, chief architect and chief of Architectural and Engineering Services. In his current position with the Department of General Services, he is the state building official for all state-owned property and oversees construction, maintenance and operations of the more than 6.5 million square feet of state buildings. He holds a bachelor of architecture from the University of Tennessee, is a licensed architect in Virginia, and is an International Code Council Certified Building Official.
“Bert has been a valuable resource to IBTS during his three terms on the board because of his deep knowledge and direct experience as a state building official,” said Ashok Goswami, IBTS chief executive officer. “We look forward to his leadership role this year in further strengthening the IBTS-government partnership.”
